Sydney Hodkinson presents Flageolet - Soliloquy-Variations for Solo Flute and optional Harp.
From the composer:
'In the late fall of 1984, I had given various solo instrument exercises to a few of my composition students and apparently I took the assignments most personally, because three short works of my own resulted: 1) Chalumeau, for two clarinets; 2) Trauermusik, for trombone or violoncello; and 3) Flageolet, for solo flute.
Flageolet (an early designation for the whistle flute) is a relatively brief arietta slowly assembled together, and entirely built, from the opening epigrammatic comments of the flute soloist. A long arc of melody gradually ensues, gaining momentum and then subsiding, within a largely traditional shape. The initial fragments continually re-group themselves into a set of six variants. An optional harp part accompanies the flutist on the short voyage.'
