Though Leopold Hofmann (Hoffman, Hoffmann) is perhaps better known for his other Concerto in D Major misattributed to Haydn for two hundred years, this particular Concerto in D for flute and orchestra (here in a reduction for flute and piano) is by far the better work. An expansion of the more traditional Classical forms found at the time, the Concerto invokes full-blown virtuosic writing for the flute at a time when that level of composition generally belonged to string players.
