Holley, A :: Rosella & River Song
Holley, A
Alan Holley presents Rosella (1999) and River Song (1995), for flute alone.
From the composer:
Rosella (Singing to his Mate) for solo flute forms the second movement of my chamber orchestra work My Summer Garden. The intent was to portray a lone male Eastern Rosella, one of Australia's most beautiful parrots, first of all finding a mate and then calling to her over a little distance. This is not a direct transcription of birdsong, but more an impression of the tremendous energy the Rosella puts into his mating efforts.
River Song: I have, for a long time, enjoyed the challenge of writing solo works, because in the absence of harmony the melodic content becomes all-important. This impressionistic work is in three sections. The opening explores a descending seven-note pattern which leads to a quasi-improvisatory central section before a return of the opening statement, here embellished with rapid ornamentation.
