Hovhaness, A :: Upon Enchanted Ground
Alan Hovhaness presents Upon Enchanted Ground (Op. 90, No. 1) for flute, cello, giant tamtam, and harp. A quiet allegretto introduction in 7/4 establishes Hovhaness's musical language, reliant on mystical impressionism. A pause gives way to the center of the work, a dance in 2, with the harp's gentle high ostinato underpinning the flute's floating melodic line.
The work may optionally be played with flute and harp only; the cello and giant tamtam provide cinematic color but are not required for a complete sound.
