Revised by Jean-Louis Baumadier, Luigi Hughes’ Fantaisie on Mefistofeles op. 104 from Opera by Arrigo Boito is a showpiece for the piccolo. This work is an intermediate to advanced six minute piece, demanding great technical facility for virtuosic whips and turns, crisp articulation and an ability to play comfortably throughout the full range of the piccolo. Taken from Boito’s opera, the piccolo is vocal in quality, and carries the effervescent nature of a coloratura. This Fantaisie is quite lovely, and an essential addition to any piccoloists music library.
