Spirit Dance originally written marimba and recorder, received its first performance in October 2003 in St. Giles Cripplegate, Barbiean, London. Since then the piece has been altered and adapted for various instrument combinations until eventually settling on this version for marimba and flute. The opening of the piece introduces the lovely, rich chorale like textures of the marimba before subtly and almost secretly giving way to the sweet timbre of the flute melody. The main body of the piece (the 'Spirit Dance') requires both players to articulate their rhythms very accurately as they tessellate the syncopations of their respective lines.
