This piece shows all the stylistic characteristics of one of England's lesser known composers. The opening, with its unison semiquaver passages alternating with dissonant major seventh chords, has almost the feeling of a baroque concerto grosso about it, albeit with a very modern harmonic palette. These sections alternate with slower passages featuring lush harmonies and sinuous, flowing lines. The end is a flourish of semiquavers followed by a staggering series of jazz tinged chord that push all the instruments up to the top of their registers (even the alto and bass flutes!).
