Jongen, J :: Elegie, Op. 114
ALRY Publications presents 'Elegie, Op. 114' for flute quartet by Joseph Jongen, edited here by Matt Johnston.
Composed in 1942, the 'Elegie, Op. 114' belongs to Jongen's late creative period. Written during the final period of his life, the work exemplified the lyrical restraint and expressive refinement characteristic of his mature style. The elegiac character suggested by the title is realized through long-breathed melodic lines, subtle harmonic inflections, and a carefully balanced interplay among the instrumental voices. Although modest in scale, the composition displays the craftsmanship and sensitivity to timbre that distinguish much of Jongen's chamber music.
Although originally composed for a quartet of C flutes, an additional Alto Flute part transposed from the Flute 4 part has been included.
