Kompositionen fur Soloflote [Compositions for Flute Solo]
Kabelac, M

Miloslav Kabelac wrote three chamber works for flute; the two for solo flute, the Short Suite op. 13 and the Improvisation Op. 29b, are presented here.

The Short Suite (Partita piccola) was written in January 1944 while Kabelac was working on his Symphony No. 2, during the Second World War. When he absolutely refused to divorce his Jewish wife he was forced to leave his job as music director for the radio, and his works could not be performed in public. The Short Suite was not played until 1946, after the war.

The Improvisation on the Own Theme was written later, in 1956, after a series of folk cradle-songs. The first thirty bars are largely based on the lullaby, then a series of pseudo-improvisations develop with three more returns to the original melody.

For advanced players.
