Yuri Kornakov is one of the acknowledged masters and leading Petersburgian composers, pianists, and pedagogues, with works in numerous musical genres - the symphonic, the chamber-instrumental, the choral, and the vocal. His piano compositions and the music for children have especially enjoyed great popularity, as have his sonatas and concertos for winds - flute, oboe, bassoon, and clarinet.
The Sonata No. 2 for flute alone is an effective virtuosic composition with three programmatic movements, each in sharp contrast with each other. The first, Waltz, is strange yet flexible, falling continuously forward. The second, Aria, begins and ends with the flute creating two contrasting voices; a central expressive section touches impressionism in its expansion of the melodic ideas. The third, Toccata, is an aggressive yet subtle moto perpetuo with interruptions of smooth quasi-jazz.
