Kouyoumdjian, M :: Peony
Peony
Kouyoumdjian, M
Mary Kouyoumdjian (b. 1983) is a composer with projects ranging from concert works to multimedia collaborations and film scores. As a first generation Armenian-American and having come from a family directly affected by the Lebanese Civil War and Armenian Genocide, she uses a sonic palette that draws on her heritage, interest in music as documentary, and background in experimental composition to progressively blend the old with the new.
Peony (2019), for solo flute and electronics, was commissioned by the National Flute Association for the 2019 High School Soloist Competition - joining works such as Pattillo's Three Beats, Coleman's Fanmi Imen, and Dick's Lookout.
Peony itself is a celebration of life after loss. Glockenspiel and flute-like clusters of sound create a delicate garden against which the flute fiercely dances or sings with bell tones, joined intermittently by a bass drum.
