Fantasie D-dur [Fantasia in D major ] op. 38/1
Kuhlau, F

Kuhlau composed his Three Fantasias for solo flute in 1820 during a stay in Vienna, published during the next year by C.F. Peters in Leipzig. These pieces, including all expressive and virtuoso possibilities of the flute, belong to the best early-romantic flute music. Remarkably, Kuhlau, one of the finest masters in writing for the flute, was not a flutist himself - in 1829 he wrote 'I am not able to finger even the easiest note on the flute.' Nevertheless, he knew the instrument perfectly.

The theme of the Fantasie No. 1 in D major is taken from Mozart's Don Giovanni, and is concluded by an Ariette con Variazioni.
