Friedrich Kuhlau's Grande Sonate concertante op. 85 [Grand Sonata Concertante op. 85] is written here for flute and piano. Of the many works composed by Kuhlau for the flute, the Grande Sonate is doubtless one of the most important. It is not certain when Kuhlau composed this work, but the beginning of the Adagio suggests that it was unlikely to have been written before 1821. In that year the composer visited Vienna for the first time and gave the following account: '...During my stay there was only one performance of a Mozart opera, namely the Magic Flute. The house was empty and the audience applauded only when the singers disfigured Mozart's noble melodies with flourishes in the manner of Rossini...' The sonata was first announced in the Intelligenzblatt of the AMZ of March 1828. The same paper printed a review in 1829: 'As everybody knows Mr. K's manner, we only have to add that this sonata is one of his most elaborate and, at least in the first two movements, one of his most sprited.'
