Kuhlau, F :: Variations et Solos op. 10
From the publisher, Gerard Billaudot and edited by Phillippe Bernold, Friedrich Kuhlau’s ‘Variations et Solos,’ op. 10 for solo flute is a set of twelve caprices from intermediate to advanced difficulty. Bernold states,
The 1806 Variations et solos for flute solo is the first composition the 20-year old composer dedicated to the flute. These twelve pieces rapidly gained popularity for the 1823, the Hamburg publisher Cranz released a new version under the title: Variations et caprices. He changed the order of the pieces and added the titles of the compositions from which the themes were borrowed. Most of these (and their composers) have long since fallen into oblivion, except Paisiello, who aria Nel cor piu non mi sento, on which no. 6 is based, is borrowed from La Molinara.
This collection of short pieces is listed as opu 10. In order to avoid possible confusion with Kuhlau’s very first duets, which bear the same opus number (Billaudot G 7906 B), we are publishing them under the numbers 10 bis.
The present edition is based on the first version. Suggested articulations and nuances are given between brackets.
Studies no. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 11 of the present edition become respectively no. 7, 4, 11, 5, 6, 8 and 9 in the Cranz edition of 1823, renamed Variations et caprices. Friedrich Kuhlau was a prolific Danish composer of the late 18th and early 19th century.
