Dovely Duo (1998), for flute and clarinet in Bb, was inspired by the composer seeing two doves walking across his lawn one summer day, billing and cooing with each other. Kupferman relates: At first I thought I would have the clarinet doing the billing and the flute doing the cooing, then I reversed it, and finally mixed it up, so that I can't even tell what's what. The piece is playful and radiates gentle affection.
