Timo-Juhani Kyllonen s Fantasia Op 28, for flute and piano, reflects the composers Finnish heritage with its dark, icy harmonies and floating melodic lines. Surprisingly tonal for an experimental piece written in 1996, the Fantasia exemplifies the best of the new flute and piano music coming out of Finland with vivid colors and active, rhythmic movement.
The core of Kyllonen's output consists of chamber, choral and vocal music. His works are marked by highly natural, idiomatic writing for his chosen instruments (voice included), the melodic expression often being of focal importance. Fantasia (composed in 1991) was written for the 20th anniversary as an artist of flautist Ilari Lehtinen.
