Le Chant Du Monde presents Ramon Lazkano's Errobi - 1 for flute and piano. This contemporary work is subtitled Igeltsoen Laborategia which is Basque for 'Gypsum Laboratory'. Composed in 2008, this 21st century work employs extended techniques for both the flutist and the pianist. The use of extended techniques in both the soloist and accompanist provides a truly unique aural experience for both performers and audience members. The title Gypsum Laboratoy provides an image of science and minerals: Gypsum is a soft white or gray mineral used to make things like plaster of Paris and fertilizer,so there is something very industrial about this solo for flute and piano. Utilizing skills on the flute such as tongue rams, percussive breath, harmonics, and key clicks to open up the possibilities of sounds and tones possible on the instrument paired with the intense rhythmic pair work of the flute and the piano categorize this 10'35" solo as advanced in difficulty.
