Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf presents coincidentia oppositorum for alto flute alone.

Coincidentia oppositorum is the key concept in the philosophy of Nicholas of Cusa, where it refers to the unity of all real oppositions in the highest form of the spirit. The work's idea is based on this structural principle. contrast appears in two diametrically opposed, unmediated material types that alternate by section, each following its own rules.

 - Sections with the note E4, played normally at a constant tempo using the variative possibilities particular to the flute (vibrato, flutter tongue, microtonal deviations, timbre trills etc.);

 - Sections with the remaining pitches, but produced percussively (key clicks, tongue ram, tongue clicks, two forms of lip pizzicato, speaking consonants into the instrument).

The two sections mediate the antagonistic quality, forming perhaps not a complete unity in Cusa's sense, but at least a formally satisfactory coexistence within a whole.

Duration: 7'. For the advanced player.
