Marco, T :: Sonata para el Poniente [Sonata for the West]

The rich, sonorous violence of Tomas Marco's Sonata para el Poniente, for flute and piano, unfolds immediately as the flute oils her way across arpeggios and melodic fragments while the piano punctuates with aggressive chords and rhythms, expanded throughout the first movement. The second movement, a Lento e misterioso, uses only pitched air, key slaps, and multiphonics from the flute, and quite isolated sounds from the piano, in a strange alien song. The third movement continually falls forward with a heavy reliance on syncopation and quintuplets, moving directly into the fourth movement, an exploration of descending quarter tones. The fifth movement closes, a Presto assai, with an aggressive pursuit-and-chase between flute and piano.
