Based on the story "Hoichi the Earless" from Lafcadio Hearn's collection of Japanese ghost stories Kwaidan, Marsh's Hoichi combines traditional Japanese techniques, ghostly reverberation, and aggressive vocalizations to invoke this ancient tale.
