Jason McMahon presents Spellbound for flute and piano.
Spellbound gives a musical representation of the natural and magical forces at work on earth, with mother nature as a spectacular magician. Each movement aims to represent the magic of nature and the progression and cycle of growth.
The first movement, Air, uses the flute to represent lightness with its fluttering and floating, while the piano takes on the role of destruction through hurricanes and tornadoes. The second movement, Water, begins with crashing waves against steep cliffs. This is contrasted later with the gentle ebbing flows of streams and rivers. The third and final movement, Earth, runs attaca from the previous movement with a depiction of water droplets pounding the surface and soil. The interruption of the flute represents life rumbling beneath the soil.
