'While teaching selections from the popular Southern Music Company collection, 24 Short Concerto Pieces, I observed that many students benefited from additional, related exercises that contributed to their mastery of fundamentals and increased their chances or a successful performance. I concluded that it would be advantageous to have a preparatory etude that would expose students to the challenging issues they might encounter within each concert piece. Therefore, my colleague, Jean Marshall, and I decided to prepare a series of 24 etudes that correspond with the selections found in this collection.'
