Medina, KC :: Selkies
ALRY Publications presents 'Selkies' for flute choir by Kari Cruver Medina.
The composer writes about this piece, "Selkies are shape-shifting women who come from the sea. Featured in Celtic mythology, they are woven into mysterious stories of longing and heartbreak, stories which always involve being torn between land and sea. This composition has a happier ending. The work begins moodily, as a lone woman is drawn to the shore. The waves speak to her. Undulating patterns create the motion of water. You sense she is torn. As the waves move in and around the main theme, a call to freedom represented by a short Celtic folk motif is heard. This theme prevails, and eventually she joyously responds and disappears beneath the waves."
