Chiel Meijering's A Hippopotamus on Nova Zembla is a strange, semi-mystical exploration for flute and piano on the unusual juxtaposition of a large water mammal on the deep northern isolation of Nova Zembla itself. Quiet ideas filled with mysticism and meditation alternate with hard, bright streaks of sound and driving rhythms. A very unusual yet gripping tone poem.
