Mendelssohn, F :: The Evening Star
Mendelssohn, F
The Evening Star, op. 38 No. 1, was written for the piano, but a piano piece does not necessarily fit the performance style of the flute. Therefore, unusual liberties were taken in the arranging of this score. The second flute part was conceived as an obbligato to the melody and should not overshadow the lyric line of the first flute. At one point, the second and third flutes actually replicate the line of the piano part but then the obbligato returns to accompany the solo line. The accompaniment parts should be played as legato and softly as possible.
Instrumentation: 6 C Flutes, Alto Flute (optional), Bass Flute (optional), String Bass/Contrabass Flute (optional)
