Mercadante, S :: Concerto in Mi minore [Concerto in E minor] op. 57
The aim of the present critical edition of the Concertos for flute by Saverio Mercadante is to give performers and scholars access, finally, to this important body of concertos, in a complete and coherent way. In addition, the introduction attempts to describe how the composer fits into the historical context of his time.
In particular, this Concerto in E minor op. 57, is quite problematic since the composer himself made two different versions: one for large orchestra and the other for small orchestra which differ not only in the accompanying instrumentation but also in the overall conception and in various passages of the solo part. This edition fully complies with the critical information available, at times offering a version somewhat divergent from other editions that have been in circulation for many years and have entered the repertory.
