Darleen Mitchell's Dichotic Sounds, for alto flute alone, is an extensive single-movement work that explores the idea of dichoticism - that is, separate sounds in different voicings drawing attention to and away from themselves. In several alternating sections - slow meditations and incredibly quick virtuosic flickering, both utilizing several extended techniques - Dichotic Sounds is both a showpiece and an exploration of the breakdown of melody.
