These Twelve Variations on 'Ah Vous Dirai-je Maman' (better known as Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star), for flute and piano, gives the flute a greater share of the piece than do arrangers from Mozart's time, and indeed than Mozart himself would have been prepared to do. The treatment used is in the spirit of the early 19th century. Mozart's composition is based on the contrast between the lapidary, almost archetypal theme and the hidden counterpoint of the individual 'movements.' In this Barenreiter arrangement the editors have tried to reveal the various styles and structures of the twelve variations while adhering to the stylization present in the dozens of transcriptions and settings of the theme done in Mozart's time.
