Nicholson, C :: Beauties: 38 Airs, Variations, and Dances
Alry Publications presents 'Beauties: 38 Airs, Variations, and Dances' by composer Charles Nicholson for solo flute.
Editor's Note: This music - indeed, the greater part of the music printed by the publishing industry of the late 18th and early 19th centuries - was directed towards the at-home musician with a simple aim: to bring pleasure to the ears and to the player.
Like much of Nicholson's output, the Beauties are generally complex elaborations of the popular sung and folk music of the time. Initially published as 48 individual volumes - one Beauty per volume - they were meant to be taken home and enjoyed, only later being collected into 4 combined volumes and, eventually, one larger book.
The Beauties may certainly be used in performance and recital. They especially suite the shape of an encore as a display of beautiful, easy skill. One might say, however, that they're more at home on the living-room stand - ready for a pleasurable moment of music.
This collection is presented in facsimile from the found manuscript, with the original drawn titles of each work presented. Why? Simply because, like the works themselves, they are beautiful.
