Nourse, N :: Peppermints, Shepherd's Crooks, and Red Spirals from 'Candy Cane Suite'
Publisher: ALRY Publications
Nourse Wind Publications presents 'Peppermints, Shepherd's Crooks, and Red Spirals from 'Candy Cane Suite'' for flute choir, composed by Nancy Nourse.
The composer writes about this piece, 'This movement explores the three most distinctive features of the traditional candy cane: the vivacious peppermint flavour, the pastoral shape imitating shepherds' crooks, and the vibrant red spirals. Following the opening of an anticipatory ostinato, the piccolos enter in succession describing the perky taste of peppermint. After the building of this peppermint motive, the music segues into C minor where the bass flutes present a siciliano theme, modified slightly to fit into 5/8 time. The quasi da capo return is interrupted by the appearance of the concert flutes, fluidly swirling in a new color of harmonics, adding their motif to complete the concept of the candy cane. Yet like all good things that must come to an end, the candy cane itself, at the work's conclusion, dissolves into nothingness.'
