Offermans, W :: Forbidden Valley
Wil Offerman's Forbidden Valley, for flute quintet, was inspired by a dream about traveling down into a deep, dry valley - though a valley filled with living secrets, hidden waters and shy vegetation. It portrays an imaginative sound space, with interlocking rhythms, tongue pizzicatos, and wind tones.
The original instrumentation for Forbidden Valley is distinctly unusual: a low flute quintet composed of a bass flute, bass flute in F, contrabass flute, contrabass flute in F, and a double contrabass flute. Though Offermans later arranged it for more standard quintet (3 flutes, alto, and bass - with parts for both standard quintet and low quintet included here), the higher quintet preserves the dark, deep sounds of the low.
For advanced players.
