The composer writes about this piece, 'This short set of theme and variations for solo flute is inspired by Charles Ives' art song 'The Side Show,' a quick, sly, wonderfully odd miniature that lasts barely a breath but leaves an unmistakable grin. In true Ives fashion, the song twists a simple melodic idea into something unexpected: part vaudeville, part hymn fragment, and part good-natured poke at the musical 'seriousness' of his time.
'In this solo-flute work, Ive's little song is taken apart, turned around, and reimagined. The tune is compressed, bent, atomized, and reassembled, as if the flutist were holding it up to the light and discovering new colors hiding inside each interval. Virtuosity is set against moments of lyrical clarity, while extended techniques and fragmented gestures embody the fractured humor of Ives' original and push the material into a contemporary sound world.'
