Robert Parris was an American composer particularly concerned with color and the limits of instrumental virtuosity, particularly marked by his 1964 Trombone Concerto and his 1972 Book of Imaginary Beings (small chamber ensemble).
The 1965 Duo for Flute and Violin is a little-heard work, conceived as an 8-minute single-movement work that contains cadenzas for both flute and violin. A particularly strong tendency towards shifting meters and complex rhythmic interplay reappears throughout.
