Dora Pejacevic presents the Sonata Slave, Op. 43, for flute and piano.
Countess Dora Pejacevic, born into an old Croatian noble family, was a versatile artist and composer. Brn in Budapest in 1885, she lived most of her short life in the family castle in Nasice in the east of Croata, but died in Munich in 1923 at the age of only 38 after the birth of her son.
As an autodidact, her music was inspired by the great romantic composers - in her works one finds influences of Schumann, Brahms, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky. However, she kept pace with contemporary developments in music and fully developed her own compositional style.
The Slavonic Sonata Op. 43 in b minor from 1917 is a masterpiece and one of Pejacevic's most important and beautiful works. It is mature and dramatic, reflecting the times of World War I, and its intense expression and Slavic melodies mark this sonata a brilliant representation of the so-called 'fin-de'siecle'.
