Amilcare Ponchielli who, amongst others, went down in music history as the teacher of Giacomo Puccini and Pietro Mascagni, already enjoyed a spectacular success with his first opera 'I Promessi Sposi'. He was however remembered mainly by following gnereations through the ballet music of his opera 'La Gioconda', which he wrote in 1876.
The Dance of the Hours - in 1940 effectively staged in Walt Disney's animated film 'Fantasia' - describes in four parts a musical journey through the day with the hours of dawn, day, twilight, and night. Here the entirety of it is expertly arranged by Sabine Gunther for four flutes.
