Purcell, H :: Sound the Trumpet
Purcell, H
Musicians Publications presents Henry Pucell s Sound The Trumpet' arranged for flute quartet by Carson Rothrock in 2 versions: one in D Major and one in E-flat Major. Scored for 4 C flutes, this arrangement also includes an optional alto flute part to substitute for the 4th flute when available for performance.
Purcell was born in 1659. He was recognized as England s greatest composer in his lifetime and for more than a hundred years after his death. This piece is from the cantata Come ye Sons of Art' and was written as a birthday ode for Queen Mary. Henry Purcell apparently jokingly scored Sound the Trumpet' with no trumpets. (One line in the song, You make the listening Shores resound. would have referred to John Shore and William Shore, the trumpeters in Purcell s orchestra, who were listening, not playing.) - Carson Rothrock
