This gorgeous Passacaglia is from the opera 'Dido and Aeneas' by Henry Purcell, with libretto Nahum Tate, which is based on Book IV of Virgil's epic poem 'The Aeneid.' It was sung by heartbroken Queen Dido upon her suicide by sword. The music is build on a lamento ground bass line with soaring solo line supported tastefully by three bass flutes which replace the original string parts.
