Rachmaninoff, S :: Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini
Rachmaninoff, S
John York presents, for James Galway in the form of flute and piano, the 18th variation from Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini, originally for piano and orchestra.
'In transcribing this much-loved melody for flute and piano, I have striven to maintain all of the composer s complex counterpoint, allowing melody and countermelody to intertwine as closely as possible to the manner of the original. It seemed appropriate to simplify the massive four-note chording of the solo piano part, lest the flute line be swamped. What did not seem appropriate to me was transposition to an easier key, the rich color of D flat major being a quintessential part of the melody s appeal.'
