From the composer:
'Subway Solitary is an early work of mine that was completed on December 27, 1978 in Los Angeles. During my years as a resident of New York City, I used to often ride on the subway trains. When traveling alone I would withdraw into the world of my inner thoughts and reflections, which would then intermingle with the ever-changing pace and rhythms of the train itself. Here the piano represents the underground train setting, upon which the flute (as the solitary rider) is able to carry out its musically interpreted journey.'
