Rollins, S :: Sonny Rollins Omnibook
Rollins, S
'Sonny Rollins is the greatest improviser ever! That's what those who love and study his music say. Born September 7, 1930, Sonny has a career that spans nearly the entire history of modern jazz. As a young alto player, I was first introduced to Sonny's music by my improvisation teacher Charlie Shoemake back in the mid 19070s. By using Sonny's transcribed solos, Charlie pointed out to me how Sonny would craft his improvisations following an incredibly well thought out set of musical rules that respected all the important elements of jazz. Like all accomplished jazz musicians, Sonny studied the greats who preceded him. In particular he adopted the core harmonic approach that Charlie Parker had infused into jazz. With his transcriptions, Charlie Shoemake was able to teach many of the great jazz players of today how to navigate and create their own improvised solos. Given Charlie's knowledge of Sonny's music, I asked him to hand-select tunes for this book. These special transcriptions represent the best teaching vessels for the jazz student who is exploring how to improvise. All these transcriptions have been painstakingly created to the best of my ability. I have used a combination of analog and digital manipulation and over forty years of transcribing experience to write down the notes Sonny was playing. You can learn his music and how he approached solo construction from this book with the confidence of minimal errors.'

'By studying Sonny Rollins, you will be dealing with no just a portion of the necessary elements of jazz music, but with ALL of them. He has been and always will be a gigantic influence on the way jazz music should be played.
