EC Schirmer presents "Lucy: Australopithecus afarensis" by composer Elena Ruehr. This piece is written for flute, Bb clarinet, violin, viola, cello, and piano.
The composer writes about this piece, "Lucy walks from morning through a full day with a child in her arms through a vast landscape. It is mysterious and sometimes dangerous, but full of magic and beauty. There are birds and rustlings, vistas and horizons. She watches the stars at night and then dawn comes again.
"'Lucy is the common name of AL 288-1, several hundred pieces of bone fossils representing 40 percent of the skeleton of a female of the hominin species australopithecus afarensis. in Ethiopia, the assembly is also known as Dinkinesh, which means 'you are marvelous' in the Amharic language. Lucy was discovered in 1974 near the village Hadar in the Awash Valley of the Afar Triangle in Ethiopia by paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson."
