Joly Braga Santos was born in Lisbon in 1924 and died in there in 1988, at the peak of his musical creativity. His early works showed a modal tendency motivated by the desire to connect contemporary music and the golden period of Portuguese music, the Renaissance. Also evident in his music are melodic outlines of the oldest folk songs of his country, songs he considered 'of mesmerizing originality and grandeur'.
The small Piece for Flute, for flute and piano, is a neo-romantic miniature that displays Santos' lush writing to full effect.
