Sargon, S :: The Night of the Headless Horseman
Simon Sargon presents The Night of the Headless Horseman, a tone poem for wind quintet, piano, and optional narrator based on Washington Irving’s novella, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
An adaption of the score for 20th Century Fox’s Night of the Headless Horseman, an hour-long animated feature film, this quintet takes 22 minutes of the best material and compacts it into 7 bone-chilling movements with narrated interludes.
We open with a dark introduction on the Headless Horseman himself - a fitting setting for this spirit. The second movement, third, and fourth movement introduce Katrina, the lovely lass, and Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones; the two rivals for Katrina’s affection. In the fifth movement they come together at the Quilting Frolic, but it is not to be - The Witching Time strikes in the sixth movement, and we hear groans against the darkness. The final movement, The Chase, is a whirling run; but will we have a happy finale, or will poor Ichabod Crane meet his end at the hands of the Horseman?
