This companion work to Monochrome I is also composed for 8 flutes. The work mirrors the structure of the earlier work. Consisting of an opening section followed by a contrasting section, followed by a recapitulation of the first section; the slow-fast-slow of Monochrome I becomes fast-slow-fast in Monochrome V. (There is therefore a consistent alternation of tempo when the two pieces are programmed together.) The outer sections of Monochrome V feature an interlocking figure that is taken through various chord changes, much in the manner of the first prelude in Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. In the middle section a serene modal melody is echoed, extended, and briefly interrupted by a chorus of three piccolos.
