Sonata in E flat major, D. 568

Schubert, F

International Music Company presents Franz Schubert's Sonata in E flat major, D. 568 edited for flute and piano by Robert Stallman.

'This Sonata for Flute and Piano is a transcription of Schubert's early Piano Sonata in E-flat major, originally written in June of 1817 in the bold key of D-flat major. Likely in 1826, Schubert took the trouble to revise the work, transposing it to the more practical (and publishable) key of E-flat major. At that time he also expanded the first and last movements and added a new Menuetto, while deftly borrowing its Trio from another 1817 piano work, his Scherzo in D-flat (D. 593).

Rarely performed, the E-flat Piano Sonata is one of Schubert's most radiant and engaging depictions of springtime. With fresh melodic ideas and daring harmonic curiosity, the composer celebrates the season he loves, blending the sounds of nature with waltzes and Hungarian Gypsy music. Aside from a grief-laden Andante, the work reads like a daydream of blissful times.' - Robert Stallman, 2009
