Schultz, W-A :: Japanische Nebellandschaft [Japanese Fog Landscape]

In Japanese art produced under the influence of Zen Buddhism there is a particular type of image - that of a landscape covered or obscured by fog. This image, of great traditional poetic significance, highlights the Buddhist idea of concepts of beauty without reality - things that arise out of the void or nothingness and sink into it again, that are part of a process without fixed identity.

The flute solo itself, built on these idea, could be said to be framed by a ritual formula, with concrete, concise figures emerging from vague, relatively contourless, almost misty lines before disappearing again, creating two short themes that intertwine at the climax before sinking back into vague forms.
