Makoto Shinohara presents Passage for stereo amplified bass flute.
Passage consists of a succession of 17 independent fragments which represent various states of feeling and action. These states are, however, only a part of the numerous possibilities; they are temporal and always changing.
The sound material, limited to those obtainable from the instrument, includes, in addition to the usual tones, many new ones through new performing techniques such as glissando, multiphony, key percussion, tongue-ram, aeolian sounds, and tones with different timbres and attacks.
The sounds are amplified and played back in stereo by a second performer. The sound movements in space such as vibrato, glide, skip, quick aleatoric change of positions are more than the effect, they are an integrated component of the composition.
