The Passage of Time

Slade, J

The Passage of Time by Jonathan Slade. A richly melodic cycle of songs for soprano, flute, and piano exploring a journey through the pain of loss to the rebirth of hope.

"Writing The Passage of Time was an act of catharsis that stretched over about eighteen months as I navigated a difficult period in my life. The idea of writing a song cycle with common musical themes but different languages had occurred to me before, but suddenly my circumstances provided a story to tell, and an urgency with which to tell it. The Passage of Time refers to both the journey from moonlight through dawn to dusk, as depicted in the poetry by Verlaine, D'Annunzio and Uhland, and the rather longer journey from love and heartbreak to eventual acceptance. Though the language and musical style changes with each of these steps, melodic and rhythmic  themes are shared between the movements, recurring and evolving as the story unfolds." -Jonathan Slade

The three songs are designed to be performed together, and without pause.
