Leo Smit's Sonata for Flute and Piano, his last work, is of unusual composition; though he was Jewish, the sonata contains almost no traces of cantorial melody or Hebraic folk songs. It instead reflects a cosmopolitan sound, somewhere between the Dutch and the French musical styles, with expressionist and sly jazz references slipping in and out of view. Urban and sophisticated, the Sonata is a challenge both musically and technically.
