Stuart Saunders Smith presents Rose for solo flute, with spoken text and movement.
Rose begins with a recitation of Anne Sexton's text, written for this piece. The flutist then segues directly into Stanza I. The second stanza pairs words with flute with sung notes and notes played while singing, and the third stanza involves directed physical gestures paired with matching musical gestures.
